What is Gastroscopy?
Gastroscopy (also known as Upper GI Endoscopy) is a safe and advanced diagnostic procedure used to examine the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). A thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera at the end is gently passed through the mouth, allowing the doctor to view the digestive tract in real time.
It helps in identifying the cause of symptoms like acidity, stomach pain, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, and bleeding.
Why is Gastroscopy Done?
Your doctor may recommend a gastroscopy to diagnose or treat conditions such as:
Persistent acidity & acid reflux
Gastritis or stomach ulcers
Difficulty swallowing (Dysphagia)
Chronic nausea or vomiting
Upper GI bleeding
Suspected infections
Celiac disease
Tumors or polyps
What Happens During the Procedure?
- You will be asked to fast for 6–8 hours before the test.
- A mild sedative or throat spray may be given for comfort.
- The endoscope is gently inserted through the mouth.
- The doctor examines the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.
- The procedure usually takes 5–10 minutes.
- Biopsy (tissue sample) may be taken if needed — painless and safe.
Is Gastroscopy Safe?
Yes. Gastroscopy is a very safe procedure when performed by an experienced Gastroenterologist. Complications are extremely rare. The patient can resume normal activities shortly after the test.
